SUMMARY:The last months of life: end of life care support
DESCRIPTION:General Practitioners are increasingly providing palliative care and end of life care support as our population ages. GPs can feel a lack of confidence in managing patients at end of life due to lack of training.  This education event aims to provide an update on: \n\nsupports available in the community including community palliative care\, Northern Sydney Home Nursing Service\, Hospital in the Home\, Navigator service\, Caring Communities\, care packages\nupdate on end of life symptom management\nupdate on Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) and the interface with community services\, paperwork at end of life (including VOD/MCCD/cremation paperwork update/coroners requirements)\nReview of opioids used at the end of life\, and rules and regulations around their use\nchallenges of prognostication in malignant and non-malignant disease\n\nThis event will be held at the NSLHD Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice (AYAH) and will also include a panel discussion with GPs\, Northern Sydney Home Nursing representative and palliative care representative on how we can best work together to provide optimal care for our patients. \n6:00pm – 7:00pm Dinner & Registration       7:00pm – 9:00pm Presentations & panel discussion

DESCRIPTION:PREPARE Training (Primary–healthcare Resilience Emergency Preparedness All-hazard ResponsE) | Disaster Management Basic Training for General Practitioners and other Primary Care Providers  \nPart 1 will use a scenario to assist participants in understanding local risk of disaster hazards and how a disaster will be managed in the Sydney North PHN region. It will discuss the potential impact on General Practice\, health providers and local community in our region and will outline how to create a disaster plan for the practice. \nPart 2 will build on the knowledge from Part 1 and discuss the patient presentations you might see in General Practice during a disaster and run through the response to a disaster in your local practice. It will outline how GPs and staff might contribute in an evacuation centre.  It will also cover cybersecurity issues for General Practice and include lessons learned about the effects of a disaster on the General Practice business by GPs who have been through bushfire and flood disasters. \nThis course will equip participants with the skills to: \n\nUnderstand how a disaster health response is organised and how GPs and local health professionals might be involved whether in the usual General Practice or assisting in evacuation centres or on site\nOutline how the PHN will support GPs during a disaster\nOutline how to do disaster triage sieve and sort during a mass casualty incident\nUnderstand Psychological First Aid and Skills for Psychological Recovery

DESCRIPTION:Voluntary assisted dying (VAD) commenced in NSW on 28 Nov 2023 and\, by the time of this webinar\, will have been in operation for nearly a year. \nThis webinar offers an update on the first-year experience in delivering VAD services to patient and families from those at the forefront of its design and delivery. \nSpeakers will discuss how VAD is being integrated into end-of-life planning\, including with palliative care; how to refer patients; some of the emerging trends in patients’ choices such as location and type of administration\, and highlight the role and challenges for GPs.

SUMMARY:Nurse Network: Dementia Matters - A practical approach to assessment and care for people living with dementia
DESCRIPTION:Sydney North PHN\, in partnership with Dementia Training Australia\, present a two hour program for general practice nurses and other primary care nurses who would like to learn more about dementia. \nThe population of people aged 65 years and over is increasing worldwide and with this the prevalence of dementia. Dementia is now the leading cause of disability in Australia and the leading cause of death for women. Team-based primary care can improve health and social outcomes and reduce hospital admissions for people living with dementia and their carer(s). \nCaroline Gibson and Professor Dimity Pond will present an interactive session including case studies and group activity. It will cover the role of primary care and the primary care nurse in dementia care\, dementia signs\, symptoms and diagnosis\, impact of dementia on the person\, family and community\, brain health promotion\, recognising cognitive change\, assessing cognition and impact on function\, communication skills and adapting care in context of cognitive impairment.
