DESCRIPTION:Voluntary assisted dying (VAD) commenced in NSW on 28 Nov 2023 and\, by the time of this webinar\, will have been in operation for nearly a year. \nThis webinar offers an update on the first-year experience in delivering VAD services to patient and families from those at the forefront of its design and delivery. \nSpeakers will discuss how VAD is being integrated into end-of-life planning\, including with palliative care; how to refer patients; some of the emerging trends in patients’ choices such as location and type of administration\, and highlight the role and challenges for GPs.

SUMMARY:Nurse Network: Dementia Matters - A practical approach to assessment and care for people living with dementia
DESCRIPTION:Sydney North PHN\, in partnership with Dementia Training Australia\, present a two hour program for general practice nurses and other primary care nurses who would like to learn more about dementia. \nThe population of people aged 65 years and over is increasing worldwide and with this the prevalence of dementia. Dementia is now the leading cause of disability in Australia and the leading cause of death for women. Team-based primary care can improve health and social outcomes and reduce hospital admissions for people living with dementia and their carer(s). \nCaroline Gibson and Professor Dimity Pond will present an interactive session including case studies and group activity. It will cover the role of primary care and the primary care nurse in dementia care\, dementia signs\, symptoms and diagnosis\, impact of dementia on the person\, family and community\, brain health promotion\, recognising cognitive change\, assessing cognition and impact on function\, communication skills and adapting care in context of cognitive impairment.

DESCRIPTION:GPs and Practice Nurses are invited to join us at the Geriatrician Outreach to GP education event. The face-to-face event is designed to enhance skills and knowledge in the management of older\, complex patients in the community. \nThe evening will: \n\nEnhance knowledge to manage older people and their families\, including Chronic Pain\, cognitive impairment and Palliative Care decision making\nDiscuss complex case studies with Geriatrician panel. Attendees are encouraged to submit their case studies\n\nSpeakers will include Chronic Pain and Palliative Care Specialists from Northern Sydney Local Health District\, in addition to the Geriatricians of the Geriatrician Outreach to GP service \nThe Geriatrician Outreach to GP Service provides specialist input to GP centred care of subacute older and complex patients. The service is part of the Rapid Care for Frail and Older People Program\, which includes Keeping Well and Independent Quality Improvement Program (KWIP) and Geriatric Outreach (ARRT\, BRACE and GRACE teams). \nThe program is jointly funded by Northern Sydney Local Health District and Sydney North Health.

However\, their use raises significant concerns. \nPIEDs’ prevalence spans diverse demographics\, from competitive athletes to recreational gym-goers. Societal implications range from distorted body ideals to potential legal consequences. Health risks associated with PIEDs include cardiovascular complications\, liver damage\, and psychological effects. \nThis webinar will provide healthcare professionals with strategies that can assist in engaging in harm minimisation conversations with patients\, considering cultural nuances and individual needs. Resources such as the PIEDs Guide and Quick Reference Guide can provide advice to guide patients effectively and allow for collaboration with fellow professionals\, establishing clear professional boundaries ensuring ethical\, legal\, and patient-centered decision-making.
