Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health: Working with Aboriginal Youth Series

Sydney North Health Network (SNHN) invites adults who support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island young people to a three-module course including online learning modules and a 3-hour face to face workshop. Participants will gain in-depth knowledge and skills in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in:

  • Social determinants of health and their impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Exploring one’s own cultural lens and how it can impact work with young people.
  • Exploring the impact and manifestation of trauma on young people.
  • Reflective checklists. Participants will meet with our course developer to discuss course aspects and explore/troubleshoot individual application of skills and information shared

Online interactive training:
Module 1: (60-90 mins) & Module 2: (90-120 mins)

Participants must complete Module 1 & 2 to be able to attend the face-to-face workshop

REGISTRATION TERMS & CONDITIONS
This 3-module course is free of charge to “eligible participants”. To be an “eligible participant”, you need to register for and complete all 3 modules of the course. Participants who fail to attend and complete one or more of the three modules will be charged a course cancellation payment of $200 by SNHN. Please carefully check the deadlines and understand time commitment before registering for this course.

SPEAKERS:

Eliza Pross, Director Ochre and Salt
Eliza is a proud Yuin/Nuenonne woman, who was born and grew up on the Northern Beaches, Saltwater Country, in Sydney. Eliza works within a range of human service environments across Australia, with the ultimate aim of improving health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Eliza is currently the Gawura Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) President and works with a range of schools and education providers, particularly those supporting Aboriginal students and borders. She holds BA (Social Policy and Psychology), Bachelor of Social Work (Hon) and Master of Policy Studies (Human Services) degrees.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Adults working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in the following areas:

  • Service providers
  • Educators
  • Clinicians
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Use operational checklists to improve cultural safety when supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
  • Discuss the impact of social determinants and health behaviours on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes.
  • Explore the ways that trauma and context can influence youth presentation and experiences in education, health, and general community settings.
  • Utilise course reference material to develop skills used when working with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people.
  • Apply the information in a live cultural coaching and yarn-up session with our course developer.
