Exercise to Prevent Falls in Older People

Through access to online learning modules and a half-day practical workshop, Allied Health Professionals will be equipped with essential knowledge and skills to design safe and effective community falls prevention physical activity and exercise programs for older adults.

Topics include:

  • The social and economic issues of falls
  • Risk factors for falls
  • Physiological consequences of ageing
  • Maximising uptake and adherance to exercise programs
  • Biomechanical and physiological principles of balance
  • Effective falls prevention strategies.

Through structured learning tasks, participants will gain the ability to identify, develop, demonstrate, and implement evidence-based exercise interventions.

Participants are required to complete the pre-workshop online modules to attend this half-day face-to-face practical skills workshop.

CPD: Participants will be eligible to self report 6 hours; 3 hours pre-workshop online modules, and 3 hour practical face-to-face workshop

SPEAKERS:
Dr Daina Sturnieks | PhD in Human Biomechanics, Neuroscience Research Australia, UNSW Medicine
Dr Sturnieks has worked in Falls and Balance related research for 18 years. Her research focuses on understanding biomechanical, sensorimotor and neurocognitive contributions to balance and falls in older people and clinical groups, and randomised controlled trials of novel interventions to prevent falls involving balance, stepping and cognitive training.
Sally Castell | Physiotherapist, Movement Matters
Sally has over 40 years of experience in the health and fitness industry having worked work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports clinics, community facilities and retirement centres. She now focuses her expertise on working to support older adults with a variety of exercise programs.
Steven Phu | Accredited Exercise Physiologist and PhD candidate, Neuroscience Research Australia, UNSW Medicine
With 10 years of experience as an exercise physiologist, Steven’s clinical practice specialises in falls prevention and the management of osteoporosis, sarcopenia and frailty.
TARGET AUDIENCE:

Allied Health Professionals in the Sydney North Health Network Region.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Identify common fall risk factors in older adults considering intrinsic and extrinsic factors
  • Apply evidence-based interventions for exercise, medication review, and environmental modifications
  • Evaluate balance mechanisms; including physiology and biomechanics of balance and how these impact falls risk
  • Design effective fall prevention programs integrating multifactorial approaches and individualised strategies
COST:
There is no cost for Allied Health Professionals and their staff within the SNHN region to attend this training
