Face to Face: The role of Imaging in Joint and MSK pain management – Diagnostic and Therapeutic

Sydney North Health Network (SNHN) along with Hornsby Ku-Ring-Gai Hospital Medical Imaging Department invites local GPs, Pharmacists and Allied Health Professionals to an informative education and meet and greet opportunity.

Dr Mo Gomaa, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologist will discuss the HKH Medical Imaging department’s capabilities, encompassing both diagnostic and therapeutic services, with focus to various Joint and MSK procedures and the benefits of bone scans in accurately confirming facet arthropathy and inflamed facet joints, which are a common cause of low back pain.

Dr Sandeep Sharma, Nuclear Medicine Physician will share information on the use of bone scans in providing an Interventional Radiologist more accurate information for treatment planning, particularly for those amenable to CT-guided steroid injection. He will also discuss other causes of acute or chronic low back pain including discovertebral disease, crush (osteoporotic) and traumatic fractures and osteoblastic metastatic disease.

This training will assist GPs, Pharmacists and Allied Health Professionals in recognising when bone scans are necessary to accurately diagnose and evaluate the underlying causes of low back pain. This knowledge can contribute to more targeted and effective treatment plans, improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

The department aims to collaborate with local GPs, Pharmacists and Allied Health Professionals working to enhance the overall health of the Hornsby and surrounding catchment Community.

Dr. Mo Gomaa, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologist | Clinical Director, Hornsby Hospital Medical Imaging Department

Dr Gomaa is a diagnostic Radiologist and proficient interventional radiology consultant with more than 13 years of specialised experiences in both public and private capacities at local hospitals.

Dr. Gomaa delivers high-caliber interventional procedures to a diverse range of patients, including inpatients and outpatients. His clinical focus lies in image-guided pain management, particularly in the realm of spinal and joint injections, showcasing a commendable technical success rate.

Dr. Sandeep Sharma,Physician  Nuclear Medicine

He has experience performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures utilizing radiopharmaceuticals and cutting-edge imaging technologies and has conducted a wide range of general Nuclear Medicine studies. For over 15 years he has played a leading role in interpreting nuclear medicine images for Central Coast and Regional NSW for iMed.

Dr. Sharma’s aims to utlisie his skills in nuclear medicine to improve patient outcomes through enhanced diagnostic accuracy.

General Practitioners, Pharmacists and Allied Health Professionals working in the Sydney North Primary Health Network Region.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

• Differentiate the range of procedures conducted at HKH Medical Imaging, encompassing both diagnostic and therapeutic services with focus to various Joint and MSK procedures.

• Discuss the benefits of bone scans and their role in accurately diagnosing low back pain.

• Interpret bone scan results for enhanced patient care and effective treatment planning inluding suitability for CT-guided steroid injection pain relief.

• Appraise various potential causes of low back pain including discovertebral disease, crush (osteoporotic) and traumatic fractures and osteoblastic metastatic disease.

• Utilise course reference materials to identify effective referral for Medical Imaging
