Improving GP practice responses for people with substance misuse and related problems

This session will prepare general practice staff, from front desk personnel to GPs, to recognise and manage patients affected by substances while prioritising safety and harm reduction principles. Participants will learn clinical presentations of substance use and withdrawal, developing protocols that balance patient care with staff safety. The session focuses on reducing stigma and implementing practical strategies to help all staff respond effectively and confidently when working with patients experiencing substance intoxication or withdrawal.
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the clinical features of psychoactive substances by comparing and contrasting their acute effects, intoxication symptoms, and withdrawal presentations
- Differentiate between various patterns of substance use, including the development of dependence, tolerance and withdrawal, with an emphasis on identifying clinical features

Transition to eReferrals across Northern Sydney Local Health District

From June 2025, Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) will exclusively accept Electronic Referrals (eReferrals) from GPs for outpatient services, replacing all paper-based methods such as fax, email, or post. This transition applies to outpatient clinics and community health services across Royal North Shore Hospital, Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Health Service, Mona Vale Hospital, and Ryde Hospital. This recording provides a comprehensive demonstration of the eReferral system, including how to submit referrals. It includes participant Q&A addressing concerns regarding this transition, how to ensure a smooth implementation process, integration of various practice software with Health Link and the role of health pathways as a reference guide.

Facilitating change in your Practice – Session 1

This webinar will assist practice staff involved in leading and implementing change including practice owners, partners and practice managers. This is the first in a series of 3 webinars designed to assist staff facilitate change in their practices. The outputs of the Strengthening Medicare Task Force and subsequent reform and investments announced by the Federal Government in 2023 have brought an extra dimension to the work of general practice. Aspects of this include efforts to increase access to primary care, encouragement of multi-disciplinary team-based approaches, workforce reform, and the introduction of MyMedicare and voluntary patient registration. All of these potentially carry the need for change within the practice team.

Low Back Pain – Latest Evidence and Sharing the Burden through Team Based Care

This webinar discusses the management of patients who present with low back pain.
This session is presented by GP academic Professor Simon Willcock, along with Profs Simon French and Mark Hancock from Macquarie University.
Speakers discuss the latest evidence related to low back pain and how this can be applied in general practice to optimise patient outcomes.
The presentation will use the recently released Australian Clinical Standard for low back pain, and the WHO guideline for the management of chronic LBP as guides for applying high quality care.

Professor Simon Willcock – Clinical Director of Primary Care and Wellbeing, MQ Health
Prof. Willcock is a General Practitioner and Clinical Program Head of Primary and Generalist Care, Wellbeing and Diagnostics at MQ Health. His education and research interests include the health of doctors, generational change in the medical workforce, men’s health and musculoskeletal medicine. Simon trained as a rural procedural GP and practised in Inverell, NSW. He has had a number of educational and clinical leadership roles and is currently a board member of the Sydney North Health Network and Estia Health.
Professor Mark Hancock – BAppSc (Phty), MAppSc (research), PhD, is Professor of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, Macquarie University.
Prof. Hancock is one of the world’s leading back pain researchers (e.g. ranked 3rd internationally according to Expertscape on 1/1/23). Mark has 20 years of clinical experience as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist working in primary care, but now works full-time as an academic/researcher. Prof. Hancock’s research focuses on the development and testing of effective treatments and prevention strategies for low back pain. He has over >200 peer reviews publication on low back pain assessment and management.
Professor Simon French – Professor of Musculoskeletal Disorders at the Department of Chiropractic, Macquarie University, where he is Director of Research.
Prof. French undertakes implementation research in primary care with a focus on the management of musculoskeletal conditions. Simon is an implementation scientist and clinical researcher in the area of low back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. He has completed 13 randomised trials published in major journals, e.g. Annals Int Med, Implementation Science, Pain, and completed 16 systematic reviews. He is a Chief Investigator on 2 current NHMRC-funded trials.

Annual Influenza and influenza Immunisation Training for GPs and Nurses

Viewers will be presented with an outline of influenza strain coverage and vaccines used for the 2023 program, brief review of the epidemiology of influenza infection, rationale for promoting vaccination amongst high-risk groups, and an outline of vulnerable cohorts for whom antiviral use may be appropriate in the community.

MBS item numbers for Older Persons in the community including Case Conferencing

Aimed at providing an overview of the Benefits to patient outcomes of using case conferencing and the MBS items available to support and provide care to the elderly population (living in the community, not those in residential aged care).
The MBS items discussed include:
- 75+ Health assessments- full comprehensive review of patient’s health, social, mental and physical health
- Care plans and team care arrangements- plans to provide appropriate referrals to allied health workers
- Home medication reviews- full review of medications to prevent any hospital risks due to medication mismanagement
- Case conferencing- service provision of multidisciplinary team meetings to work collaboratively to ensure best outcomes for patients
- DVA specific programs such as Coordinated Veterans Care Program and Allied health cycles of care- both of which are aimed at reducing hospital admission and support provision
- Mental Health Plans- the provision of a mental health plan to access psychological services in the elderly who may be suffering from any type of mental health condition (depression most common)
All of these programs focus on identifying health concerns within the elderly and providing support through referrals to allied health services appropriate to the person’s needs.
GPs and Practice Nurses/Support staff will learn how to make time to ‘book in case conferencing’ to utilise item numbers and improve patient outcomes.

- Identify and manage a patient or group of patents that is making recurrent presentations to hospital (ED) through available support services

Transgender Care in General Practice: Gender Affirming Care

This webinar is aimed at improving care of transgender patients.
It is estimated that between 0.5% and 1% of the population is transgender or gender diverse. Studies suggest that transgender /gender diverse people have higher rates of mental health and drug and alcohol issues. It is known that gender affirming care improves mental health.
There are many barriers to accessing primary health care for transgender/ gender diverse people including limited GP experience and access to GP services, particularly around gender affirming therapy. Further, GPs themselves report lack of skills and knowledge in transgender/gender diverse care.
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the health needs of transgender and gender diverse patients and the elements of gender identity
- Utilise improved confidence and knowledge in caring for transgender and gender diverse patients, including management of gender affirming therapy
- Identify and discuss referral options and resources providing further support for transgender patients
